On August 9th, 2016, we were invited to Purkersdorf by Austrian Federal Forests (Österreichische Bundesforste AG). Roland Kautz and Rudolf Freidhager presented the company in a very captivating way. They emphasized that the highest priority of the Austrian Federal Forests was sustainability as they maintain every tenth square metre of Austria’s natural landscape and therefore bear responsibility.
They also told us about their own permanent forest inventory which is really important as only the annual increment is used.
Alexandra Wieshaider and Johannes Wimmer then showed us around the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve which consists of 5 percent core zone, 19 percent buffer zone and 76 percent transition area. They discussed both the difficulties and potential that come with the city of Vienna close by. We were also excited to learn about the BirdLife project in the Biosphere Reserve.
